DULUTH, Minn. - The Bemidji State University soccer
team had a serious lack of offense in its 1-0 loss to the University of
Minnesota Duluth Friday night at Maloski Stadium.
Clare
Dahmen notched a goal in the second minute for the Bulldogs with
assists from Alex Paffrath and Danielle Scheuer, and the Beavers were
never able to mount a comeback as they fell for the third-straight time.
BSU
was outshot 20-1, marking the first time the Beavers have been held to
just one shot since Sept. 1, 2007, in a 1-0 loss to North Dakota State
University. The last time a non-Division I opponent held BSU to just
one shot was during the 2002 season.
The lone shot came from the Beavers’ leading scorer, Ashlee Ellefsen (So., Hugo, Minn.). UMD led the way in corner kicks 5-1, while neither team was called offside.
Goalkeeper Samantha Ross (So., Stillwater, Minn.) gave up the one early goal before finishing the game with eight saves.
Bemidji
State moves to 9-7-1 on the season and are 3-7-1 in Northern Sun
Intercollegiate Conference play. The Beavers are also 2-11-1 all-time
against the Bulldogs, but have a pretty solid record as of late, going
2-2-1 in the last five meetings and 1-1 this year.
Maybe
it’s the turf, which BSU rarely plays on, or maybe it’s
traveling to Duluth, but the Beavers can’t seem to play well
against the Bulldogs at their home field. During coach Jim Stone’s
tenure at Bemidji State, he has played on the turf in Duluth three
times. During those three games the Beavers have taken a combined five
shots, which includes the one shot from Friday’s game.
Bemidji
State has now been shut out three times in a row for the first time
since Oct. 3-10, 2004. All five shutouts this season have come during
NSIC play, and that is the most times the Beavers have been shut out
during conference action since 2002.
BSU is
now 0-2 when playing conference teams for the second time this season.
Bemidji State defeated UMD 2-1 in the second game of the year, and also
defeated and then was defeated by Minnesota State Univesrity Moorhead
earlier in the year.
The Beavers will come
back home for the last time this year, stepping out of conference play
to take on the University of Wisconsin-Superior Sunday. This will be
Senior Day and the game will begin at 2:00 p.m.
