Box Score BEMIDJI, Minn. - The freshman pair of
Kara Johnson (Anoka, Minn.) and
Danielle Coffey
(Circle Pines, Minn.) picked up their first win as Beavers as they
defeated the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs Kelly Rosengren
and Jennifer Peterson 8-5 at the No. 3 doubles position Saturday in a
8-1 loss at the Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center.
Although
Bemidji State scored just one point in the match they stayed with the
Bulldogs putting two matches into super set tiebreakers. At the No. 1
singles position Kali Welu (Jr., Pequot Lakes, Minn.)
came back from a 4-6 first set to take the second 7-6 on a 7-4
tiebreaker before the Bulldogs Brynne Wischer escaped Welu winning the
tiebreaker 10-2. The No. 6 singles spot also saw a close finish as Amy
Erickson (Jr., Roseau, Minn.) lost her first set 3-6 to Peterson before
coming back in the second set winning it 6-2. The tiebreaker went the
way of Peterson as she won 10-4.
In the No. 2 singles match the Beavers Julie Kapsner
(Pierz, Minn.) pushed Johnson to the edge in the first set but was not
able to pick up the tiebreaker falling 7-4 for the 6-7 first set loss.
The second set proved to be too much for Kapsner as she fell 2-6.
The other two doubles spots stayed with their opponents as the No. 1 doubles team of Welu and Shelia Hoberg (Bismarck, N.D.) lost to the Bulldogs Wischer and Kayelyn Johnson 5-8 while the No. 2 tandem of Kristen Lexcen (Sr., Andover, Minn.) and Farrah Steinke (Fr., Crosby, Minn.) lost to Stephanie Keller and Caroyl Dahlman 4-8.
With the loss the Beavers record moves to (0-2; 0-0 NSIC) while the Bulldogs go to 5-4.
Bemidji
State returns to action tommorow as they will host the College of St.
Scholastica Saints at noon in the Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center.
