Beavers battle but fall to St. Scholastica 8-1

Box Score BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Beavers finished their weekend of play Sunday with a 8-1 setback to the College of St. Scholastica Saints Sunday at the Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center.

Junior Kali Welu (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) picked up her first victory of the season defeating Paula Beckermann in a super set tiebreaker by a score of 1-6, 7-5, 10-4 at the No. 1 singles spot. The victory is the ninth of Welu’s career and third at the No. 1 singles position.

Welu wasn’t the only Beaver to push her player to a third set as for the second consecutive day Amy Erickson (Jr., Roseau, Minn.) went to the Super set tiebreaker but again was eluded of her first victory of the season as Lynne Wilke prevailed 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 at No. 6 singles.

Coach Scott Sorenson changed things up in doubles play as Erin Mapes (So., Monticello, Minn.) and Cheyanne Maki (So., Watford, N.D.) made their season debut falling to Wilke and Brooke Aho 8-4 at the No. 3 doubles. The No. 1 doubles team of Welu and Shelia Hoberg (So., Bismarck, N.D.) were edged by Paula Beckermann and Katie Motley 8-6.

Bemidji State’s record falls to (0-3; 0-0 NSIC) with the loss while the Saints climb to (4-2).

The Beavers will finish their homestand on March 2nd as they will host Southwest Minnesota State in the teams first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match of the season at 8:00 a.m. Bemidji State will then face University of Minnesota Morris at 4:00 p.m. with both games scheduled at the Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center.
