Box Score BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University
tennis team found hard times this weekend as they were unable to pick
up a victory falling to Luther College 9-0, St. Cloud State 9-0, and
Winona State 8-1 at Gold’s Gym in St. Cloud this past Saturday
and Sunday.
Bemidji State started out its
Saturday with a setback to the Luther College Norse. The Norse swept
the doubles points led by the team of Brynne Zinnecker and Kathryn
Nichols who captured the No. 1 doubles point with an 8-2 victory over
the Beavers Kali Welu (Jr., Pequot Lakes, Minn.) and Shelia Hoberg (So, Bismarck, N.D.)
Farrah Steinke
(Fr., Crosby, Minn.) tried to keep her consecutive singles win streak
going as she battled Luther’s Amy Christenson at No. 5 singles.
The first set saw Christenson victorious 6-3 before Steinke outlasted
Christenson 7-5 in the second set to force the super set tiebreaker.
The tiebreaker went to the wire but prevailed in Christensons favor as
she edged Steinke 10-7 to take the point. The loss was the first in
singles action in Steinke’s career at Bemidji State.
The
Beavers finished play Saturday with a match against a tough opponent in
the St. Cloud State Huskies. The Huskies started the match sweeping the
doubles portion of the contest to take a 3-0 lead. The Huskies
continued their strong play in singles taking all six singles points.
Hoberg stayed competitive in her first set against the Huskies Aaryn
Anderson but fell in the match 6-4, 6-0.
Bemidji
State picked up its lone point of the weekend on Sunday but fell to
Winona State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate action. Julie Kapsner
(Jr., Pierz, Minn.) picked up the victory at No. 4 singles over the
Warriors Kaycee Moore taking the first set 7-6 on a 7-5 tiebreaker. She
then finished the second set with a strong 6-3 performance.
Bemidji
State’s record now stands at (3-8; 0-2 NSIC). The Beavers
continue play on Tuesday as they travel to Grand Forks, N.D. to take on
the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux with the match scheduled
to begin at 1:00 p.m. Bemidji State fell to North Dakota 9-0 in its
first match of the season back on February 2.
