Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University tennis team got its first taste of victory Sunday as it rolled past the University of Minnesota Morris 9-0 in the last of a three-match day at the Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center. The Beavers were denied their conference opener as the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs came away with a 6-3 win.

The bright spot of the day was the play of freshman Farrah Steinke (Crosby, Minn.) who went 4-0. Steinke started out the day at No. 3 doubles pairing with Cheyanne Maki (So., Watford City, N.D.) to defeat the Mustangs Diana Naatz and Trisha Baldwin 8-5. She was then given her first chance at collegiate singles competition and responded by prevailing over Cailey Grupe 7-5, 7-6 needing a 7-2 tiebreaker to claim the point at No. 5 singles.

In the second match of the day for the Beavers Steinke and Maki were given the No. 3 doubles point by forfeit as Minnesota Morris was not able to field three doubles teams. Steinke finished her impressive day by breezing by the Cougars Jeannie Borowski in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.

The opening match of the day saw Bemidji State able to get out to an early against the Mustangs as they finished with wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles. The No. 2 doubles freshman tandem of Danielle Coffey (Circle Pines, Minn.) and Kara Johnson (Anoka, Minn.) picked up their second win together prevailing over Danielle Hildebrandt and Grupe 8-2.

The Mustangs solid singles play was ultimately able to give them the victory, as they were able to take five of the six points. Amy Erickson (Jr., Roseau, Minn.) gained the first set 6-3 over Baldwin at No. 6 singles. Baldwin battled back however going through several deuces and was able to take the second set 6-4. The momentum shift was just too much to overcome for Erickson, as Baldwin was able to take the super set tiebreaker 10-4 to gain the point for the Mustangs.

In the second match of the day the Southwest Minnesota State was victorious over Minnesota Morris 9-0.

In the final match of the day the Beavers were able to hold the Cougars to a total of two games in their 9-0 victory.

Bemidji State is 1-5 (0-1; NSIC) and is scheduled to play three matches this upcoming weekend in Sioux City, Iowa. The first match is set for Saturday evening against the University of South Dakota at 6 p.m. followed by a two match Sunday starting with Morningside at 9 a.m. and concluding with Briar Cliff at noon.
