tennis team took care of the University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden
Eagles 9-0 in the second of two matches for the Beavers Sunday at the
Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center in Bemidji, Minn.
The
Beavers fought valiently but didn’t have enough in the morning
match to stop the Upper Iowa University Peacocks as the Peacocks swung
the match in their favor late by winning three super set tiebreakers by
the score of 11-9 to help them to a 7-2 victory.
The
week started off with a trip to Moorhead, Minn. on Saturday to take on
the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons. Bemidji State was
victorious in a non-conference match at home back on March 30 by the
score of 8-1 but this time saw the Dragons get their revenge in as they
defeated the Beavers 6-3 in the conference matchup.
The Dragons were able to take two of the three doubles points as the Beavers Farrah Steinke (Fr., Crosby, Minn.) and Cheyanne Maki
(So., Watford City, N.D) picked up a 7-5 victory over Kayla Parker and
Traci Pesta at No. 3 doubles to keep the Beavers in the match.
Kali Welu (Jr., Pequot Lakes, Minn.) and Sheila Hoberg
(So., Bismarck, N.D.) were able to pick up points at No. 1 and No. 4
singles respectively. Welu topped Ashley Taborsky, 3-6, 6-4, 10-2,
while Hoberg squeezed past Maria Cederberg, 3-6, 6-1, 10-7.
Upper
Iowa copied the formula the Dragons used as they were able to get off
to a 2-1 lead in doubles action. Steinke and Maki once again spoiled
the sweep of the doubles points as they topped Kelsey Montgomery and
Elizabeth Limburg in a exciting 9-7 match at No. 3 doubles.
Amy Erickson
(Jr., Roseau, Minn.) was the lone Beaver to take a point in singles
action as she defeated Nicole Henry at the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 7-5.
Bemidji
State stayed competitive throughout however as with the score 4-2 in
favor of the Peacocks and the No. 3, 4, and 5 singles still playing the
Beavers found themselves in a spot to take the match as all three spots
went to a third set super tiebreaker. Unfortunately for Bemidji State
Steinke fell to Mallery Cox at No. 3, 6-2, 6-7 on a 7-4 set tiebreaker,
and 11-9 in the super see tiebreaker. Hoberg dropped the No. 4 singles
to Kelsey Montgomery, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9. The Peacocks Erin Kelley was also
able to take the No. 5 singles match by defeating Julie Kapsner (Jr., Pierz, Minn.), 4-6, 6-2, 11-9.
In the night cap the Beavers picked up their seventh win of the season with a 9-0 thrashing of the Golden Eagles.
Kristen Lexcen
(Sr., Andover, Minn.) finished her career at the Gillett Recreation and
Fitness Center in entertaining fashion as she defeated the Golden
Eagle’s Jacqueline Noah in three sets. Lexcen dropped the first
set 6-4 before roaring back in the second by the score of 6-0 . In the
tiebreaker the senior fed off the emotion of this being her final home
match to take the set 10-4.
With the 1-2 weekend the Beavers end the regular season with a record of 7-14 (3-4; NSIC).
