JAMESTOWN, N.D. -
Ashlee Ellefsen
(So., Hugo, Minn.) extended her Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
lead in goals for the season, and the Bemidji State University soccer
team defeated Jamestown College 3-0 Thursday night at Rotary Soccer
Complex.
The BSU midfielder was able to find
the back of the net in the 25th minute after the JC goalkeeper
deflected a save into one of her defenders, and Ellefsen was in perfect
position to collect the deflection. The goalkeeper was out of position
and Ellefsen calmly struck the ball into the back of the open net for
the early lead.
The goal was
Ellefsen’s seventh of the season, matching the total from her
freshman campaign. The marker also proved to be the game-winner, which
was her team-leading fourth of the year, giving her six for her career.
The Beavers were the aggressor all game,
outshooting the Jimmies 12-4, and they were able to pump in two
insurance goals to help their cause, even though they turned out to be
unnecessary.
Ellefsen recorded an assist in
the 30th minute, when she took the ball deep into Jamestown territory
on the right side. She threw a pass over the top of the defense, and
forward Jenny Stromberg (So., Elk River, Minn.) was
able to catch up to it before any of the defenders, throwing past the
keeper for her second goal of the season. Ellefsen recorded her third
assist, a year removed from collecting two.
The last goal was scored by forward Jamie Ford
(Jr., Edina, Minn.) in the 50th minute, who had to take the ball off a
defender’s feet in order to get her third goal of the year. She
was battling with a JC player for the ball on the left side right
outside the penalty box after a pass was slid through by forward Analey Skog
(Fr., St. Francis, Minn.). The defender slipped on the wet surface, and
Ford picked up the loose ball, firing a shot into the right side of the
net past the diving goalkeeper.
BSU goalkeeper Samantha Ross
(So., Stillwater, Minn.) got the start in net for BSU, and she saved
three shots in 45 minutes of action, moving to 6-0 on the season. Abby Kjonaas
(Fr., Fargo, N.D.) saw action in her fourth collegiate game, and she
saved one shot in the final 45 minutes. The two keepers combined for
the teams’ third shutout of the year.
Coach Jim Stone
substituted frequently in the game, and the bench was cleared after
Ford’s goal to give all the youngsters some extra playing
experience.
Stone improved to 57-56-13
during his seven years with Bemidji State, making him the first coach
in school history with a winning record. The 6-0 record to start the
season is not only the greatest start in school history, but also sets
the record for the longest win streak in school history. Bemidji State
also moves to 5-5-2 all-time against Jamestown.
The
Beavers took one corner kick to JC’s three, and BSU was flagged
four times for offsides, while the Jimmies were never offside.
Both Ford and Ellefsen improved their career goal totals to 14.
Bemidji
State will take a break for a little more than a week before beginning
conference play. BSU will open NSIC play on the road against Southwest
Minnesota State Sept. 20.
