BEMIDJI, Minn.  (Gillett Recreation-Fitness Center) The Bemidji State University tennis team dropped its second match of a busy opening weekend of play Sunday, falling to University of Minnesota Duluth, 7-2.  The Bulldogs earned wins at all six singles positions to capture the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) victory at the Gillett Recreation-Fitness Center.
 
Bemidji State held its own in doubles play earning wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to enter singles competition with a 2-1 lead.

Cheyanne Maki (Sr., Watford City, N.D.) and Farrah Steinke (Crosby, Minn.) teamed up for an 8-4 victory at the No. 2 spot and the pair of Kelli Christiansen (So., Bemidji, Minn.) and Miranda Milless (So., Motley, Minn.) topped the Bulldogs’ No. 3 doubles team 8-4.

From that point on it was all UMD.  

The Bulldogs recorded straight-set victories at the No. 1, 2, 4 and 6 singles positions, while they needed tie-break success before earning wins at No. 3 and 5 singles spots.  After garnering a first-set win, 6-3, Brittney Greenwaldt (So., Morris, Minn.), the Beavers’ No. 3 singles player, lost the second set 7-5 and fell 10-8 in the tie-breaker.  At No. 5 singles, Kara Johnson (Jr., Andover, Minn.) also won the first set, 6-3, but saw her fortunes change when she dropped the second set 6-3 and was defeated in the tie-breaker, 10-2.

The Beavers, now 1-2 on the season and 1-2 in NSIC play, are next in action Mar. 2, when they travel to Sartell, Minn. for a nonconference, neutral-site match up with Montana State University-Billings.  The match is set for a 10 a.m. start.
