BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University tennis team cruised past University of Minnesota, Crookston Friday evening, 9-0, in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play at the Gillett Recreation/Fitness Center.

The Beavers earned three points in doubles play as the BSU pairs of Lindsey Luberda (Sr., Champlin, Minn.)/Kelli Christiansen (So., Bemidji, Minn.), Cheyanne Maki (Sr., Watford City, N.D.)/Farrah Steinke (Sr., Crosby, Minn.) and Kara Johnson (Jr., Andover, Minn.)/Miranda Milless (So., Motley, Minn.) each posted straight-set victories at their respective doubles positions.  

The Beavers would not look back sweeping the six singles matches to blank UMC and garner their second win of the 2010 season.

Steinke gave the Beavers a 4-0 lead when she dropped Cassandra Jarvis, 6-2, 6-3, at the top singles spot.  Luberda followed with a straight-sets triumph of her own, dropping UMC’s Michelle Boateng, 6-1, 6-0.  Brittney Greenwaldt (So. Morris, Minn.) battled back to earn a win at No. 3 singles.  After falling to Andrea Laiviere, 6-3, she bounced back to take the second set, 6-4, and posted post a 10-5 tie-break victory.  Christiansen and Katherine Wolak (Jr., Geneseo, Ill.) each recorded straight-set wins over their respective opponents at their No. 4 and No. 6 singles spots to put BSU up 8-0.

Before the Beavers could complete their first sweep of the season, Caitlin Krueger of Minnesota, Crookston, which fell to 0-7 on the season, would push Johnson to the limit at No. 5.  Johnson took the first set, 7-6, after a 7-4 tie-break.  She again needed a tie-breaker (7-5) to win the second set, 7-6.

The Beavers improves to 2-3 overall and are 2-2 in NSIC play.  BSU continues its busy week of competition tomorrow when the team hosts Gustavus Adolphus College for a 9:30 a.m. nonconference affair at the Gillett Recreation/Fitness Center.
