BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s No. 2 doubles team of Farrah Steinke (Sr., Crosby, Minn.) and Cheyanne Maki (Sr., Watford City, N.D.) gutted out an 8-6 victory Saturday at the Gillett Recreation/Fitness Center, but that was all the team scoring the Beavers would muster as Gustavus Adolphus College defeated the BSU tennis team 8-1 in nonconference action.

In the most competitive match of the morning, Steinke and Maki traded games with the Gusties’ pair of Mary Roop and Leigh Kreklau before garnering victories in two of the last three games to earn the 8-6.

At No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, Gustavus posted 8-2 wins over BSU teams of Lindsey Luberda (Sr., Champlin, Minn.)/Kelli Christiansen (So., Bemidji, Minn.) and Kara Johnson (Jr., Andover, Minn.)/Miranda Milless (So., Motley, Minn.) to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

GAC made easy work of the Beavers’ down the stretch, garnering straight-set victories at five of the six singles positions.

Johnson gave BSU its best chance of gaining a point forcing a tie-breaker with Alison Utke at No. 5 singles.  Johnson took the first set, 6-4, but fell to Utke in the second, 6-3 and came up short in the tie-breaker 10-6.

The Beavers, now 2-4 overall, return to action Mar. 19 when they host Concordia College-Moorhead and University of Minnesota-Morris at the Gillett Recreation/Fitness Center.  BSU will battle UMM at noon before welcoming Concordia-Moorhead at 5 p.m.
