Bemidji, Minn (BSU Soccer Complex) – The BSU women’s soccer team took to the pitch to take on rival Beavers, of Minot State University on Sunday afternoon. BSU would come up victorious, winning by a score of 4-2 with all four goals coming from different players.
The BSU win pushes their record to 7-7-2 on the season, and
Minot drops to 6-7-0 on the season.
The game was a non-conference affair; with Minot playing an independent
schedule this season before joining the NSIC next season.
Both teams would find the back of the net twice in the first
half, with BSU taking a 2-0 lead before Minot responded with two goals of their
own.
Bemidji’s first goal came off the foot of sophomore forward
Jessie Voeller (White Bear Lake, Minn.).
Voeller picked up a rebound after a shot by senior Kirsten Erickson (F,
Coon Rapids, Minn.) and buried it in the back of the net. The goal came in the 22nd
minute of the game and was Voeller’s second of the season.
Bemidji would add one more just four minutes later when Bri
Scanlan (Sr., F, East Grand Forks, Minn.) placed a shot in the upper right
corner of the net. It was
Scanlan’s third goal of the season.
Sophomore midfielder Maria Mcleod (White Bear Lake, Minn.) picked up the
assist, her second of the season.
Minot would answer just three minutes later with a goal from
their leading scorer Jamie Council.
Council took a long shot from outside the box and beat BSU goalkeeper
Abby Kjonaas (Sr., Fargo, N.D.).
Kjonaas got a hand on the ball but was not able to keep it out of the
net.
Minot would tie the game up in the 40th minute on
a penalty kick of the foot of Sidney Bockoven. It was the second time this weekend that Kjonaas faced a
penalty kick.
The two teams would play tied for the next 40 minutes of
play before BSU broke the game open.
Senior defender Kathryn Bjorge (Prior Lake, Minn.) would get her first
goal of the season, scoring on a tricky free kick play.
BSU would add to that lead just over a minute later when
Erickson added a goal of her own.
Erickson was able to find the net in a scramble in front, scoring her
ninth goal of the season.
Freshmen goalkeeper Sonja Barr (Duluth, Minn.) took over the goal for the
second half of the game and made five saves to pick up the win on her
record. She is now 2-2-0 on the
season.
The Beavers round out their 2011 regular season next weekend
when they take on Minnesota State, Mankato on Saturday and Southwest Minnesota
State on Sunday for senior day. Both
games are slated for a 1 p.m. start and will be played at the BSU Soccer
Complex.
