TITUSVILLE, Fla. - In the midst of its first rainy day of the season, the Bemidji State University softball team won two of its first three spring training games in Titusville, Fla. Tuesday. The Beavers split two contests against St. Mary-of-the-Woods College of Indiana, winning 2-0 and falling 3-1, before routing Fisher College of Massachusetts 21-0.

BSU now stands at 4-7 in 2013.

After starting its 2013 campaign 2-6 with a 1-3 stretch at the NSIC Crossover at the St. Paul Dome and another 1-3 week in four games at the Kelly Laas Invite at the Husky Dome in St. Cloud, Minn., BSU got its first taste of outdoor softball in Florida.

In their spring training opener against St. Mary-of-the-Wood, the Beavers got a complete game in the circle from Kelsey Saralampi (Sr., P, Esko, Minn.), while team newcomer Molly Arola (Sr., IF, Walker, Minn.), who played in her first career game after joining the squad following hockey season, got her first career hit and RBI to help lift BSU to a 2-0 win.

Saralampi, who improved to 3-3, battled through two rain delays, but eventually added to her career-high in wins by making the two-run lead stick. 

After Arola shined in her softball debut, her hockey teammate, Allie Duellman (Jr., P, Maplewood, Minn.), stepped up in the team’s second game in her first appearance in a collegiate softball game. Duellman provided Bemidji State with stellar pitching, but the team’s bats couldn’t answer as BSU fell 3-1.

The Beavers’ bats woke up in the third game of the day against a reeling Fisher College squad out of Boston.

Arola, Nicole Dupay (Jr., OF, Woodbury, Minn.), and Cassie MacArthur (So., IF, Cottage Grove, Minn.) each racked up multiple hits, while freshman catcher Mikayla Osterman belted her third home run of the year to add to the team’s lead. Allison Roberts (So., P, Crystal, Minn.) excelled in her first pitching win of the season (third of her career), striking out six en route to a 21-0 victory.

Bemidji State will pick up play Wednesday as it takes on West Liberty University (W. Va.) and the University of Bridgeport (Conn.) before facing St. Joseph’s College (Ind.) and Bentley University (Mass.) Thursday. All four of those games will take place in Clermont, Fla.

After taking Friday off Bemidji State will sandwich a doubleheader against Gallaudet College out of Washington D.C. Sunday between a pair of exhibition contests against Heartland College (Ill.) and Gloucester College (N.J.) Saturday and two more exhibition games against College of DuPage (Ill.) and Tompkins Cortland (N.Y.) to finish the trip Monday.
