Box Score SARTELL, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University tennis team dropped a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) match to Upper Iowa University Sunday on the neutral, indoor courts of Gold’s Gym in Sartell, Minn.
Fresh off its first victory of the 2013 campaign, BSU found itself in a 3-0 hole after dropping all three doubles matches to the Peacocks. Caley Westin (So., Virginia, Minn.) and Meg Hafdal (Sr., Virginia, Minn.) were defeated in the No. 1 slot 8-4, while Emily Rollins (So., North Branch, Minn.) and Nicci Hedtke (Fr., Nisswa, Minn.) dropped their No. 2 doubles match 8-2 and BSU’s No. 3 doubles pair of Carlie Loeks (So., Elbow Lake, Minn.) and Jessica Dulz (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) fell 8-1.
Hafdal gave the Beavers their best shot of gaining a point in singles play taking the first set of her No. 2 singles match 6-2, before dropping the second set 6-0 and eventually falling in the tie-breaker 10-4.
BSU’s Westin, Hedtke and Loeks dropped their No. 1 (6-2, 6-2) , No. 4 (6-3, 6-2) and No. 6 (6-2, 6-2) singles matches, respectively, in straight sets, while Rollins, in the No. 3 spot, and Dulz at No. 5 singles were forced to retire due to injury and UIU would cruise to the 9-0 victory.
Bemidji State, now 1-11 overall and 0-9 in NSIC play, returns to action April 13 when it travels to Grand Forks, N.D. for a pair of neutral-site league match ups. BSU will face University of Minnesota Crookston at 2 p.m. before a 5 p.m. meeting with Southwest Minnesota State University.
