Sioux Falls edges Bemidji State, 5-4, in home opener

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Gillett Recreation-Fitness Center) -- Shaylin Prout earned a straight-set singles victory and teamed up with Deanie Hatch for a win at No. 1 doubles, but saw her Bemidji State University tennis team fall to University of Sioux Falls, 5-4, Saturday in the Beavers' 2015 home opener.

Prout and Hatch opened the match with an 8-3 win over USF's Emily Erickson and Alison Kauss in the No. 1 doubles position, but the Beavers were unable to gain any other team points in doubles play and opened singles action trailing the Cougars 2-1.

Senior Caley Westin and newcomer Rachel Franklin put Bemidji State back in position to gain the win, collecting victories at No. 3 (6-2, 6-2) and No. 5 (6-1, 6-2) singles, respectively, but BSU would gain a win in only one of the final two matches, a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles by Prout, and dropped the match 5-4.

The Beavers, now 0-6 overall and 0-5 in NSIC action, seeks its first win tomorrow when it hosts Augustana College and University of Minnesota Crookston. The Beavers open play at 9 a.m. versus the Vikings and will face the Golden Eagles at 1 p.m. Both matches will tale place at the Gillett Recreation-Fitness Center.
