Bemidji State pulls out 5-4 win over Southwest Minnesota State

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Gillett Recreation/Fitness Center) -- The Bemidji State University tennis team hosted Southwest Minnesota State University for an NSIC match-up. The Beavers came out with a 5-4 win over the Mustangs.

BSU started out strong, taking two of the three doubles matches. The No. 2 doubles pair of Caley Westin and Rachel Frankli,n as well as BSU's No. 3 team, Sabrina Okeson and Claudia Bellew, earned the wins during doubles play. The scores of the matches were 9-7 and 8-5, respectively.

The Beavers’ success continued into singles play, as they were able to take three of the six matches. BSU’s top three singles players, Shaylin Prout, Deanie Hatch and Westin pulled out wins over their opponents. No. 2 singles, Deanie Hatch allowed her opponent, Crystal Overbaugh, only two games in first set, 6-2, and swept the second set, 6-0. Claudia Bellew and Justine Scheller were both tied with their opponents after the first two sets, but lost the third set for the tie break.

The Beavers, now 4-9 overall and 3-8 in NSIC play, will host Minnesota State University, Mankato, tomorrow April 12, at 9 a.m. to wrap up the weekend.
