Box Score WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Bemidji State University soccer team's magical 2017 season came to an end Friday. After 110 minutes of scoreless play in the NCAA Tournament First Round match, Augustana University earned the right to advance by way of a 5-3 shoot out victory.
Leading 4-3 after four rounds of the shootout, AU’s Brooke Bleeker stepped to the line and found the back of the net to push Augustana past BSU and on to the second round to meet the nation’s top team in University of Central Missouri, Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Beavers and Vikings traded blows during the first half with no team solidifying itself as superior. After 45 minutes of play, the score was locked at 0-0, shots on goal were tied at 4-4 and each team had five fouls.
During the second half, the Beavers applied significant pressure to the AU goalkeeper, firing several quality scoring chances on goal, but were not able to breach the goal, setting up a 10 minute overtime period. Again the Beavers dominated play in the frame, possessing the ball for long stretches and managing a corner kick. But the teams were stalemated at the end of the extra time. The second overtime period was more of the same for BSU, but again the Augustana defense would not break and the teams needed a shootout to decide the outcome
The first round match up marked the first time the Beavers had been involved in a shootout since Nov. 4, 2009 when the Beavers were bounced from the NSIC quarterfinal round by St. Cloud State University, 6-5.
Catherine Arneson, who started the game in goal before being removed due to injury, along with Anna Fobbe combined for the shutout. Arneson made 7 saves in 71:15 of action, while Fobbe turned aside two shots in 38:45. The combined shutout is the 12th for BSU this season, which establishes a new single-season record for the Beavers.
The game, officially ruled a tie, brings BSU final 2017 record to 15-1-4. BSU set programs records for wins in a season, NSIC wins (12).
