BSU drops NSIC semifinal to Augustana

MINNETONKA, Minn. (Lifetime Fitness and Tennis Center) -- The Bemidji State University Tennis team saw its 2018 season come to an end Sunday in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament semifinal, falling to the eventual tournament champion Augustana University, 5-0.

The Vikings swept the Beavers in doubles play and were well on their way to their eighth straight NSIC postseason title. The pair of Zoë Lindgren and Ariadna Lopez-Simo gave the Beavers their best shot at a doubles point, falling in the No. 1 doubles match, 8-5. AU’s No. 2 team defeated BSU’s Hannah Alme and Brook Mimmack, 8-3, and on the No. 3 court, the Beavers’ Breann Walsh and Jacki Damberg, 8-0.

Augustana finished the match earning wins and No. 1 and No. 3 singles. Lindgren dropped her match to the Vikings’ top player, Kornel Staniszewska, 6-1, 6-1. In the No. 3 singles match, Alme fell, 6-1, 2-6.

With AU up 5-0, the final four singles matches were either unfinished or never started.

Augustana would go on to defeat Minnesota State University Moorhead, 5-0, in the championship match to earn its 22ns consecutive NSIC postseason victory and its eighth consecutive league tournament title.

While the season's end came quicker than desired, the Beavers still assembled its third consecutive 10-win season under Head Coach Mark Fodness and advanced to the NSIC semifinal for the first time since the league adjusted its postseason tournament to the current format for the 2010 campaign.

Bemidji State wraps up the season at 10-5 overall and was 7-4 in league play. Highlights of the season included a four-match wining streak to cap the regular season and defeating Minnesota State University, Mankato, 5-4 April 7, marking its first win over the Mavericks since 2004.

As the winner of NSIC Tournament Augustna will earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Central Region Tournament April 28-29, where it will join the league tournament champions from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and the Great American Conference along with the three highest ranked teams that were defeated in their respective league tournaments. The NCAA women's tennis regional parings will be announced on Tuesday on www.NCAA.com. Two teams from each of the eight regions will advance to the final site, which will be played May 8-11 at Surprise Tennis Complex in Surprise, Arizona.
