GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Bemidji State tennis team won doubles play and rattled off wins in four-of-six singles matches to post a 5-2 victory over St. Cloud State Saturday to open the spring portion of its 2020 spring schedule.

The Beavers' double pairs of Brooke Mimmack and Hannah Alme (6-2) and Hannah Peterson and Sam Edlund (7-5) capture wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches, respectively to clinch the doubles point and take an early lead into singles play.

St. Cloud State opened singles play winning two of the top three matches. BSU's Hannah Alme earned a 7-5, 1-6 (10-4) victory at No. 2 singles but was sandwiched between Ariadna Lopez-Simo, who dropped the No. 1 singles match 6-3, 2-6, (13-11), and Brooke Mimmack, who fell in the No. 3 slot, 6-3, 6-6 (7-3). But when Hannah Peterson rattled off a straight-sets victory at No. 4 singles, it put BSU back in the lead and kick started a run of wins. Laney Rutkowski earned a 6-2, 6-6 (7-5) win on the No. 5 court to tilt the match in BSU's favor before freshman Maggie Richardson battled out her first collegiate win in a tie break at No. 6 singles, 6-6 (7-2), 6-6 (5-7), 10-6 to wrap up the match.

The Beavers, now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in NSIC action, return to Bemidji, Minn. Wednesday, Feb. 5 to open the home portion of their championship season versus University of Minnesota Crookston. First serve is set for 5 p.m. at the Gillett Wellness Center.
