Beavers travel to Grand Forks with postseason at stake

BSU Women’s Tennis faces MSU-Moorhead and Mary for spot in 2025 NSIC Tournament

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Tennis team closes out its 2025 regular season in Grand Forks, N.D., this weekend and will have postseason play on the line. The Beavers face Minnesota State University, Moorhead and University of Mary Friday, April 18 and Saturday, respectively, with a trip to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament at stake.
 
The Beavers enter the final week of the regular season tied for fifth in the NSIC standings with the league's top-six teams advancing to the postseason tournament held in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Beavers are tied in the standings with University of Minnesota, Crookston and MSU-Moorhead who they face Friday afternoon setting up a dramatic match at the Choice Health and Fitness Center in Grand Forks.
 
The Beavers are looking to qualify for the NSIC Tournament for the first time since 2021. Fans can tune into a live stream of each match, here.
 
Bemidji State enters the final week of the regular season with a 3-4 conference record and are 7-7 overall while the Dragons are 6-8 (3-4 NSIC) and Mary is 5-8 (4-3 NSIC).
 
The Beavers are led by graduate senior Sophie Groen is 8-4 this season as the team's No. 1 singles competitor. She is 4-3 this season when facing conference opponents and is 4-1 over her last five matches. Freshman Mia Leshem has played all conference matches at No. 1 singles for the Beavers. She is 4-3 in league play at the spot and 7-3 overall and has won three over her last four single matches.
 
Sophomore Valesca Rodriguez has played all conference matches at No. 3 singles and is 2-5 in league play and 6-8 overall. She is followed by fellow sophomore Ana Lucia Ibanez Castro who is 1-6 against league opponents at No. 4 singles. Freshmen Lauren Rutten and Julia Lindseth round out head coach Kyle Fodness' six singles competitors with Rutten at No. 5 and Lindseth at No. 6. Rutten is 4-3 in NSIC and 9-5 overall while Lindseth is 0-7 (NSIC) and 4-9 overall.
 
The Beavers' three doubles teams consists of Groen-Leshem at the No. 1 spot, Rodriguez-Ibanez Castro at No. 2 and Lindseth-Rutten at No. 3. Groen and Leshem are 9-3 this season when teamed together while Rodriguez and Ibanez Castro are 2-6 and Lindseth and Rutten are 1-5.
 
The Beavers begin the weekend's action Friday at 1:30 p.m. versus the Dragons and will face the Marauders Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Both matches will be held at the Choice Health and Fitness Center in Grand Forks, N.D.
