Beavers advance to third consecutive NSIC Tournament Championship with victory over Huskies

BSU Women’s Soccer defeats St. Cloud State 2-0 in semifinal match to advance to championship match

Box Score ST. CLOUD, Minn. – For the third consecutive season, the Bemidji State University Women's Soccer team will play for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Women's Soccer Tournament Championship after the Beavers defeated top-seed St. Cloud State University 2-0 Friday afternoon in the semifinals.

The fourth-seed Beavers advance to face sixth-seed University of Mary Sunday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m., at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud.

St. Cloud State opened the match firing on all cylinders dominating play in its offensive half. The Huskies out-shot the Beavers 7-0 in the first half but junior Edie Frantzen was dialed in and turned aside all four shots she faced including a one-on-one chance late in the first half.

The Beavers would escape the first half clinging to the 0-0 draw but used halftime to regroup and gather themselves.

Bemidji State found its legs in the second half out-shooting the Huskies 5-2 in the half and broke through their defenses in the 53rd minute when a through ball from junior Maria Stocke sent in sophomore Sylve Waters who's shot eluded the goalkeeper but hit the far post. However, Beaver leading goal scorer sophomore Katrina Barthelt was there for the rebound and booted the ball into the wide-open net for her 11th goal of the season and first in the postseason.

The Beavers continued to pressure and in the 69th minute, Bemidji State was awarded a penalty kick and sent Stocke to the line to attempt to convert. A perfect 2-for-2 on penalty kicks during the regular season, Stocke patiently waited out the goalkeeper who dove to the right but guessed the wrong side as the Beavers took a two-goal lead.

The Beavers anchored their defenses from then on and Frantzen continued her tremendous play to preserve the 2-0 victory and earn her 10th clean sheet of the season.

Frantzen finished the match stopping all five shots she faced to earn her 11th victory of the season and send BSU to its second consecutive NSIC Tournament Championship.

The Beavers will attempt to earn their second NSIC Tournament Championship in program history Sunday afternoon and earn the automatic bid into the NCAA DII Women's Soccer Tournament.

Kick-off between the Marauders and Beavers for the NSIC Tournament title is slated for 2 p.m., at Husky Stadium Sunday.
