Beavers travel to Winona for pair of NSIC matches

Bemidji State will play Winona State on Friday and Upper Iowa on Saturday

WINONA, Minn. – With one Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match complete, the Bemidji State University Women's Tennis team will travel to Winona this Friday and Saturday for a pair of conference matches. The Beavers will face host Winona State on Friday starting at 6 :30 p.m., before closing the weekend against Upper Iowa on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Bemidji State (1-5, 0-1 NSIC) began the NSIC schedule last week in Grand Forks against Minnesota Crookston. The Golden Eagles were able to hold off the Beavers to claim the 6-1 victory. It was the second meeting between the teams in 10 days.

Nicoleta Anestiadi is off to a 4-0 start in singles play. She opened the season winning three straight at No. 3 and then moved up to the second spot against Minnesota Crookston and continued the winning streak.

Laura Burger has won a pair of singles matches so far this season. She tallied both at the No. 4 spot collecting a three-set win in the home meeting against the Golden Eagles and then a straight set win over College of St. Scholastica.

Freshmen Emilia Sand and Blanca Lopez-Oro have added the other singles victories this season.

Burger and Lexi Leitner have won two doubles matches so far this spring. Leitner has tallied three wins overall this season as she teamed with Lily Jones this past weekend to claim the victory.

Winona State has gone 23-2 against the Beavers since 1994, as the Warriors have won seven straight in the series. The last win for Bemidji State was during the 2016 season when the Beavers came away with the 7-2 win in Grand Forks.

Winona State has played just one match so far this spring taking the conference opening win over Upper Iowa with a 7-0 victory last weekend in Winona.

That was Upper Iowa's first and only match so far this spring season as well. The Peacocks are 11-5 against the Beavers in the series since 2007. Bemidji State has won five straight in the series, winning last year by a 4-3 count in Bemidji. During the 2021 season, the teams played in Winona with BSU taking the 5-2 victory.

After the two matches this week in Winona, the Beavers will then be off until Mar. 4 when they will travel to Rogers to face Bethel.
