BEMIDJI, Minn. – It might have taken longer than head coach
Jim Stone would have liked but the No. 24 Bemidji State University Women's Soccer team earned its fifth consecutive victory Thursday night after scoring in the 74
th and 86
th minutes for the 2-0 win over University of Sioux Falls at Chet Anderson Stadium.
Â
The Beavers remain undefeated on the season at 5-0-2 and are 3-0-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play while the Cougars drop to 0-5-0 (0-2-0 NSIC).
Â
Bemidji State struggled to find its scoring touch in the first half after totaling 10 shots but just three tested USF goalkeeper Caroline Titze. The Beavers stepped up in the second half however, and just seven minutes into the half, they posted two shots that were denied by Titze.
Â
BSU kept pressuring the Cougar defense and looked to break through in the 73
rd minute when Davey beat a defender but her shot hit the far post to keep the score knotted at 0-0. The Beavers didn't waiver and just one minute later sophomore Sylve waters blasted a right-footed shot that Titze got a glove on but it deflected right to Davey who was unmarked on the back post and scored the game's first goal and her second of the season.
Â
Â
Just 12 minutes later, sophomore
Katrina Barthelt spun off her defender and sprinted 45 yards winning the foot race of the nearest Cougar defender and fired a shot to the left side with her right foot that beat the keeper scoring the crucial 2-0 goal and her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Â
Â
BSU played the possession game to preserve the two-goal lead for the remaining four minutes and in doing so secured its fifth consecutive victory as well as its second consecutive shutout. The Beavers have now shutout five of their seven opponents to start the season and junior
Edie Frantzen earned her NSIC leading fifth shutout.
Â
USF attempted three shots in the match but failed to put any on target while the Beavers dominated play in their offensive third and totaled 28 shots with 11 on target. Bemidji State also attempted 11 corner kicks compared to 0 for Sioux Falls.
Â
Bemidji State will now have the weekend off from action and returns to play next Friday (Sept. 29) with a road trip to Marshall, Minn., to face Southwest Minnesota State University. BSU will then head to Winona, Minn., to take on Winona State University, Sunday.
