Junior Maggie McCarthy marks PR and first-place finish with three Beavers in Top 10

SAUK RAPIDS, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Cross Country team took to the Wapicada Golf Course in Sauk Rapids, Minn. this afternoon to race in the Bob Waxlax Invitational, hosted by St. Cloud State University. The 4,000-meter race between Bemidji State, St. Cloud State and College of St. Benedict was won by BSU junior Maggie McCarthy.

Maggie McCarthy took the top spot and shaved over a full minute off her 4,000-meter personal best with a final time of 14:37.90. Her previous record was set at 15:38.7 during the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon Twilight in September 2022, her first race of her collegiate career.

Carol Miller and Nadia Vaughn also cracked the Top 10 for Bemidji State with Miller in eighth and Vaughn taking ninth. Miller also broke her previous 4K race time by around 43 seconds, marking a 15:08.6 with her previous best sitting at 15:51.5. Around 14 seconds after Miller crossed the line, Nadia Vaughn grabbed ninth place with her 15:22.80 run, marking yet another PR for the Beavers this afternoon.

Rounding out the scoring for the Beavers were Abigail Namukwaya at 17th, racing in the first 4K of her collegiate career. Namukwaya finished with a time of 15:47.20. In the Beavers' fifth spot was Carmen Lyon who finished at the 15:53.30 mark and in 19th place. Similarly to Namukwaya, Lyon had not ran in a 4-000-meter race during college until this afternoon.

Sophie Rylance tallied the 27th-place finish with a 16:08.50 followed by Ava Werner in 33rd with a 16:50.10. Finishing out the race for BSU, Callie Ressler and Sydnie Price found 44th and 46th with finishes at 17:42.3 and 17:46.8, respectively.
