Charles was a four-sport athlete, he lettered in Football, from 1951-1954.  He was named 2nd Team All-NIC Quarterback, 1954. Charles also lettered Baseball, 1953 and 1954 and lettered Track, 1953.  Participated in Basketball, 1952-1954. He won Senior Athletic Award, 1954. After his time at BSU he coached football and in 1962 High School Football Conference Co-Champions. 1962 and 1964 High School Track Teams Conference Champions. Minnesota High School Coaches 25 Year Club.
