He went on to complete a Master's at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1950. While at BSTC he was all-conference and captain of the track team, running the 100 and 200 relay and competing in the long jump. He also played halfback and safety on the football team. In 1951, Pete joined the staff at Thornton Community College in South Holland, Illinois, and served as a football, basketball, and track coach. He has also served as the athletic director and chairman of the physical education department. He compiled a football coaching record of 61-34-4 and in 1957 his team was the national junior college champion. Over the years his teams won seven conference championships. Peter founded the North Central Community College Conference, has been honored by his colleagues as Coach of the Year and has been actively involved in sponsoring the Shriners Bowl Game in Savannah, Georgia. In 1985, the athletic facilities of Thornton Community College were named Schloss Field in Pete's honor.
