Russel Smith lettered in basketball, football, and track, from 1942-1943, 1945-1948 seasons. During his basketball career Russel was All-Conference during the 1945-1946 season. He became a Physical Education teacher and coach from 1948-1970. From there he took his talents and became an Athletic Director, from 1970-1987. He was inducted into the Minnesota Athletic Director Hall of Fame, in 1989. Russel was named Regional Athletic Director of the Year, in 1986-1987. In 1958 Russel was named Minnesota Sports Champion in Beltrami County. He also received the U.S. Senate Award for work with Native American youth in 1950.
