Herb Whiting was a letter winner of the BSU football team from 1931-34; Recipient of many individual awards including All-Conference 1933 and 1934; Member of BSU baseball team; Member BSU's first hockey team 1931-34; Played semi-professional hockey for Hallock, MN, in the International Hockey League when Hallock won the last Shea Cup; Played in the newly formed States/Dominion League while teaching in Hallock where he also served as recreation director for the Hallock School District; Organized Hallock's first football program and established and coached their first high school hockey team; Began teaching in Bemidji in 1938 where he established a machine shop and welding curriculum at the High School; Served as assistant football coach; Was instrumental in bringing hockey into the Bemidji High School program and was the first curling team coach; Officiated hockey, football and basketball throughout Northern Minnesota and Eastern North Dakota; Active in community youth, human service and church organizations.
